Our Story
Our Story | Our Leadership | What We Believe | Our Vision | Church Planting
Each of us has our own story to share
about how God has brought us to the place that we now are. Sanctuary's
story starts with God placing a passion in His people's hearts to
share His love with the communities they live in. During his time
serving at the Citadel, Shawn Maze began to pray that God would raise
up a church for the people of downtown Charleston. Over time, God began
to put in him a vision and a passion to start that church. While there
are many churches downtown, there are still large segments of the
population that don't have a church to call home. At Sanctuary, we
understand that we aren't the church for everyone, but we do believe
that everyone needs a community of faith to belong to.
God also placed similar passions in people that would begin to meet
together in the summer of 2006, to study the bible together and pray
for this new work that God was starting. As that group grew, and as God
opened doors to allow for it,
plans where made for specific steps to move forward. On January 6th of
2007, Sanctuary held its first public service with about 100 people in
attendance. Since then, we have worked hard to develop a core group and
leadership team. We have made a lot of the mistakes along the way and
have learned more than we would have ever imagined.
We believe our best days are ahead of us, and seek daily for how God
would lead us to impact the city of Charleston for the sake of the
Gospel. We are looking ahead at new ways to engage the college
population and the young families in our community and desire to raise
up leadership to start new congregations in other areas of Charleston.
God has been proven faithful to provide for us over and over again and
we can't wait to see what He has for us next.
